George Howard (1843-1911) 9th Earl of Carlisle: Artist and Patron
This major retrospective of the work of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlise, is scheduled to be shown at Tullie House Art Gallery, Carlisle, and at The National Gallery, London, 2011-12.
The exhibition marks the centenary anniversary of the death of George Howard (1843-1911). He was a prolific artist and patron, was a Trustee of the National Gallery for thirty years, and his lineage can nowadays be found at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. Friends and contemporaries included Burne-Jones, William Morris, Legros, Costa and Leighton. He has never however received the attention gained by this circle, and the exhibition will be the first opportunity to redress the balance with a major display of his works, gathered together for the first time, to be shown at two venues.
